Description

A walk around Ranmore Common and along the North Downs Way with an opportunity for a detour to Polesden Lacey.

Walk away from the church as far as the last house on the right, with the two prominent chimney stacks, and take the track signposted to the Youth Hostel. Once past the hostel, continue along the track, climbing up and ignoring a track off to the right. Pass under a bridge and continue for about 3/4 mile to reach an approach road.

Turn left to reach a fork signposted towards several cottages including 'Prospect Lodge, keep following signposts for the cottages.

Beyond the house at the crest, pass under a thatched bridge, and at the end of the sloping wall, continue ahead down a yew-lined embankment.

At a path junction, bear right up to Yew Tree Farm. Continue on the main track for a further 200yd to reach a gate on the right.

Go through into a field and cross it keeping to the top side. In the second field, descend diagonally to a gate, turn left up the track beyond.

Go past Pigden Cottage and walk on to reach another house, Hogden Cottage.

Just beyond this, turn up right onto a track. Cross the road and continue along the track. Descend on a holly-fringed path to join the drive leading from Haneys. Cross the road, taking the drive into Friars Elm for 100yd. At a bend, go over the stile and cross two fields then descend to a road.

Cross the road slightly to the right and take the path which climbs the bank, bearing left and staying parallel to the road. Go through the kissing gate out of the woodland and bear left around the field. Keep ahead, following the telegraph poles and go over the stile by the green metal gate.

Diagonally cross the next field, heading towards the buildings, then take the path between the buildings, up the drive to reach the road by a sign for 'Dunley Hill Court.

Cross the road and take the path past Red Gables. Go ahead at the path crossing. Keep ahead at another crossing. Shortly the path reaches a T-junction where you turn right to reach the reservoir.

Turn left immediately before the railings to emerge from the woodland. Keep left and go down the trail with a dip to the left. Soon you will reach a second dip on your right; follow the path round clockwise to descend onto the North Downs Way.

Turn left to reach a road. Cross and keep on the North Downs Way for about two miles.

When you finally emerge from the woodland, cross the grassy slope diagonally to the left to reach the car park and the start of the walk.
